Multiple units from Sioux Falls Fire Rescue and other emergency personnel were on the scene of a fire at the Arena Storage units located at 1602 W. 2nd Street in Sioux Falls.

According to Captain Garett Dulaney, the report of the fire came in at 11:19 PM on Saturday, September 24:

On our arrival there was heavy smoke and fire showing from a 40’x150’ storage building. The storage building had approximately 40 units and the building was three quarters involved in fire. Crews worked to stop fire spread and salvage property in unburned units. Crews remain on scene working to extinguish hot spots. There were no injuries to residents or firefighters.

Sergeant Tommy Schmitz, Sioux Falls Police Department, described the damage:

One entire building containing numerous individual storage units sustained heavy fire and smoke damage from a fire that originated inside one of the storage units.

One of the storage unit tenants was on the scene and was questioned and later arrested. William L. Vance, 52, was charged with Reckless Burning, Failure to Report Dangerous Fire and Possession of Firearm by Convicted Felon.

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue responded with 12 fire trucks and four support units with 53 personnel. Sioux Falls Fire Rescue was assisted by South Dakota Air National Guard Fire Department, Sioux Falls PD, and Paramedics Plus Ambulance.
