Sioux Falls Police Lt. Michael Colwill says there has been an increase in stolen vehicles this year.

"From January 1 to April 22 of 2015 there were 89 stolen vehicles. From January 1 to April 22, 2016 we have seen 143 stolen vehicles."

In most cases, Colwill says the crimes could have been prevented.

"A significant amount of the stolen vehicles in Sioux Falls had the keys hidden inside the passenger compartment. We would ask for the public's help in trying to lower those stolen vehicle numbers by securing the vehicle and not to hide the keys inside the passenger compartment."

In the United States, a vehicle is stolen an average of every 21 minutes.
