State Cheer, Dance Competition Includes Over 400 Athletes! See Results, Photos.

The South Dakota State Cheer & Dance Competition was held this weekend in Aberdeen. Class A schools competed on Friday, followed by AA on Saturday. Over 400 high school girls from across the state competed in the top cheer and dance event of the year.

As one of the coaches of the Lincoln High School dance team in Sioux Falls, I was in attendance for Saturday's event. After a long season of competitions it all boiled down to the state competition and the fight for the title.

Most people don't realize the time and energy it takes in order to get these routines ready. Preparation begins with practices in the summer, some as early as June. Teams everywhere practice many times a week, sometimes daily in hopes of perfecting their routines for competition.

Cheer and dance are both incredible activities for high school girls as they promote determination, teamwork, athleticism and positivity. All teams did a fantastic job this weekend, and it's exciting to see that cheer and dance have such a large presence in our state's activities system. Here are the top 6 performers overall in both categories and in each class:

Class AA Cheer: (out of 16 teams total)

  3. SF O'Gorman - 250.00
  4. Watertown - 249.00
  5. Brookings - 244.50
  6. SF Roosevelt - 243.00

Class AA Dance: (out of 15 teams total) 

  1. SF Washington - 289.17
  2. Brandon Valley - 277.50
  3. SF Roosevelt - 259.00
  4. Huron - 254.17
  5. Watertown - 246.00
  6. SF Lincoln - 245.50

Class A Cheer Results: (out of 18 teams total)

  1. Sioux Valley - 236.00
  2. Dakota Valley - 233.50
  3. Custer - 226.50
  4. Platte-Geddes - 225.50
  5. Dell Rapids St. Mary's - 221.50
