South Dakota’s State Sport
Usually during this time of the year people are thinking of South Dakota sports that are associated with snow and cold. But many forget about what is considered South Dakota’s State Sport.
In towns across South Dakota, people love to watch and be a part of a South Dakota tradition. Rodeos are part of the South Dakota culture and take place all across our state. From PRCA to 4-H and high school-level events, a South Dakota rodeo is an experience that will never be forgotten.
Rodeos first began with cowboys competing against each other while doing everyday chores in the Midwest. That quickly led to the cowboys competing against others from neighboring ranches, which led to an association being formed. South Dakota’s first rodeo is said to have been in Rosebud in the late 1890s, but the sport of rodeo continues to go strong today.
