South Dakota’s ACT Scores Are Above the National Average

It was good to see South Dakota’s ACT scores are above the national average again.

For the past five years or so, that’s been the case–not by a lot, but enough to give us some bragging rights. Again.

South Dakota’s average composite score was 21.9, while the national average was 21.0.

The ACT–I assume it still stands for “American College Testing”–tests potential college students on reading, English, mathematics and science. Scores are on a scale of 1 to 36, and if you’re down in the single digits, someone will likely tell you college is going to be difficult for you.

Back in the Dark Ages, between my junior and senior years in high school, I was looking toward college. A classmate and I came to Sioux Falls on a Saturday to take the test.

I remember the tests being difficult, but when the scores came back during my senior year, I was called into the superintendent’s office to explain myself.

Seems my ACT scores and my grades didn’t really match up (my scores were a lot higher), while a classmate was just the opposite–an “A” student with scores lower than mine.

I didn’t go into it then, and I won’t go into it now, except to say that it had a lot to do with motivation and inspiration.

But having said all that, pat yourself on the back, South Dakota students. You’re well above average, and the whole country knows it.
