Egglands Best‘ is looking to find America’s Best Recipe. Recently the website has announced the Midwest semi-finalist recipes that will compete for the title of "Best in Region."An a South Dakota woman is in the running to win it!

Here name, as being shown on the website, is Carissa D. and she has submitted her recipe for "Rhubarb Custard Kuchen." If Carissa can pull this off, she would win $10,000 and a year supply of eggs. If she wins just the best in the mid-west she will win $1,000.

Recipe Ingredients:
  • 1 1/2 Cups Water
  • 1/2 Cup Sugar
  • 1 package Yeast
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 4 1/2 Cups Flour
  • 2 Eggs
  • 2 Cups Cream
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 Cup Sugar
  • 1/2 Cup Flour
  • 1/4 Teaspoon Salt
  • 1 Tablespoon Vanilla
  • 3 cups rhubarb, cut in 1/2 inch pieces
  • 2 tbls sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
Preparation Instructions:
  • Mix 1 1/2 cups of water, 1/2 cup of sugar and package of yeast. Let stand 1/2 hour.
  • Add 1 1/2 tsp of salt, 1/2 cup of oil, 4 1/2 cups of flour, and 2 eggs to yeast mixture. Mix well.
  • Place in greased bowl, cover and let rise in warm place.
  • Knead dough, return to greased bowl, cover and let rise again in warm place.
  • Roll dough for seven 9 inch greased pans.
  • Cook 2 cups of cream, 2 eggs, 1/2 cup of sugar, 1/2 cup of flour, 1/4 tsp. salt in saucepan until custard starts to thicken.
  • Stir in 1 tbls vanilla.
  • Put 1 1/2 cups rhubarb in pan.
  • Pour 1/2 custard mixture over rhubarb.
  • Mix 1 tbls of sugar and 1/2 tsp cinnamon together and sprinkle over one kuchen.
  • Bake in 375 degree oven for 25-30 min.
  • The dough makes enough for 7 kuchens. But the custard and fruit would be enough for two. The extra dough can be frozen for later.
