Wednesday (October 25) is Winter Awareness Day in South Dakota. Today's forecast is for sunshine and warm temps. But it's time to start thinking about the snow, wind, and cold that's coming our way.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Todd Hietkamp reminds us:

With today being winter weather awareness day in South Dakota, we want to remind people to start preparing their families, homes, and vehicles for the onset of winter weather.

And with the snow in the forecast, it’s none to soon to begin those preparations. Begin by putting a winter survival kit in every vehicle in your household. Then make sure your vehicles are ready for winter by having a mechanic check them over. In the same light, have a qualified professional service your furnace and fireplace to ensure they’re working properly.
