A routine traffic stop turned into a high speed pursuit followed by a man climbed a grain silo in the town of Harrold in central South Dakota.

According to Pierre Police Captain Derald Gross, 25 year old Richard Barela took off east on Highway 14 at a high rate of speed, in excess of 90 miles per hour.

Barela fled the vehicle and led officers on a brief foot pursuit during which he climbed up on top of a grain silo and refused to come down. Officers established a perimeter around the grain silo and negotiators convinced him to come down several hours later.  Barela may have been running to avoid being arrested for three warrants.  He now has additional charges to add to the list.

No injuries reported.
