South Dakota came in between 30% - 35% obese in the latest research by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Why do they tell us this at the beginning of everything pumpkin spice? Not to mention, the unofficial start of pie season!

According to new data, at least 20% of every U.S. state’s population is obese. That’s at least one in five people in each state.

Interesting stats dug up by this latest round of research include:

  • The South had the highest prevalence of obesity (31.2%), followed by the Midwest (30.7%), Northeast (26.4%), and the West (25.2%).
  • Four states (Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and West Virginia) had an obesity prevalence of 35% or greater.
  • In 6 states (California, Colorado, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Montana, and Utah) and the District of Columbia obesity levels were 20% to less than 25%.
  • No state had a prevalence of obesity less than 20%.
