The annual fire school in Pierre, South Dakota is a big deal. I remember when I lived in that city and had some co-workers that were firemen and they attended.

It's a three day training for firemen from all over the state. And it's a big deal because it affects us all.

The more skillful fire departments can be, the safer we all are. Fire Marshal Paul Merriman says this year's classes range "from firefighter tactics and strategies to department leadership and everything in between."

About 400 South Dakota firefighters are expected to attend the annual state fire school. See complete schedule of events.

The firefighters will choose from 26 classes in the training event that begins Thursday with an opening ceremony and runs through Saturday.
