South Dakota DOT May Close Some Ditches On Highway 44

The State Department of Transportation says it may close a segment of ditches on State Highway 44 in Chancellor to off-road vehicles.

The plan, to be considered at a meeting August 22, would include both eastbound and westbound ditches from State Highway 17 to 461st Avenue in Chancellor, a stretch of about five-and-a-half miles.

DOT officials say off-road vehicles have damaged vegetation and caused ditch erosion in those locations.

The proposal to close the ditches follows a local request and has the concurrence of the DOT.

Snowmobiles, off-road agricultural vehicles and service vehicles used by utility companies would still be allowed.
