Basically they are a booster club for the symphony. The South Dakota Symphony Orchestra League wants to help young musicians develop their talent.

The athletic comparisons also include the League raising money for scholarships for children in pre-school all the way to age 18. Those funds mean lessons, instruments and access to professionals at the peak of their craft.

Bill Calhoun who is on the Executive Committee sees the value in cultivating children’s musical talent. “It helps with teamwork because these kids who are early instrumentalists have to learn to work as a team play in the symphony and move up to the next level it develops those skills I think will be valuable for them later on in life whether they pursue music just as a hobby or as a career.”

Past President of the League Lynda Billars sees a wealth of inspiration from youth who take advantage of the program. “To see the talent from across our state come in at all ages and perform like adults it’s just amazing to see and they will give you goosebumps something that they can use forever they can take it with them until they are 104 as long as their minds are working.”

More than 100 volunteers give of themselves to support the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra League which encourages the appreciation of music through various platforms.

The group will host a fundraising event "South Dakota Business Leaders Have Talent on Thursday February 11, 2016 at the El Riad Shrine. For more information visit sdsymphony.org.
