And the snow begins.

Just as predicted by the National Weather Service, snow hit the Sioux Falls area around noon Monday.

As of 2 p.m., the NWS reported nearly 2.5 inches of snow in Sioux Falls. At 1:30 p.m., a NWS observer reported 2.2 inches of snow in Mitchell. At 1 p.m., the NWS reported almost a half-inch of snow in Aberdeen.

Tea Storm Chasers reported low visibility on I-29 through Sioux Falls around 1:45 p.m. The Sioux County, Iowa Sheriff’s Office reported poor road conditions and visibility at 2:15 p.m.

Metro Communications in Sioux Fallswas indicating numerous weather related car accidents in the early afternoon, including an accident involving a tow truck that was already pulling a car.

The NWS said snow was falling at 1 to 1.5 inches per hour.

Public school students in the Sioux Falls School District got an extra day of Christmas break because of predicted wind chills in the -20 to -30 below 0 range.
