Off the path, but on the rail.  That seems to be a common theme among our ‘small towns of the day.’  Today’s is no exception.  Marion, SD.  Marion is indeed tucked away from the hustle and bustles of interstates and superhighways, but they are right along side the rail system.  In fact, according to Wikipedia, The city was named for the daughter of S.S. Merrill, a railroad official.[7]

According to Marion’s website, they are ‘The Place to call Home.’  If you check out their

Laid out in 1879 by Jon D. Lawler, Marion was first named Turner Junction.  In 1881 the village was renamed Marion Junction in honor of Marion Merrill, a daughter of S.S. Merrill, who was a railroad official.  The Junction portion of the name was due to the building of the branch line to Running Water, with the junction to the main line located at Marion.  The Junction portion of the name was officially dropped in 1938 by an act of the legislature.  The town was incorporated in the autumn of 1881.  At that time, the population was at approximately two hundred.

In the early days, the town had two parts – Yankee Town and Russian Town.  Yankee Town was planned by the railroad, with the business district on Main Street, south of the depot.  Russian Town, where German was spoken, started when Hieb’s Store opened on Broadway Avenue.  Yankee Town existed for ten to fifteen years, becoming a “ghost” town when all the businesses were moved to Broadway Avenue, the location of the present business district.  The Yankee Town area is today a residential area.  (Read more Marion history here)

Like so many small towns, they pick and choose a date on the calender, ‘where we all meet here again next year.’  Marion’s weekend is coming up.

The Marion Summer Celebration and All-School Reunion is held the weekend of the 3rd Saturday in June.  The dates for the 2013 Summer Celebration and All-School Reunion are June 14th, 15th and 16th.

Friday evening, June 14th, kicks off the Celebration with festivities including a chislic feed, softball games and a spectacular fireworks display.  This all gets underway at the city park beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Saturday, June 15th offers a full day and evening of events, including a 5K run and 1.5 mile walk, softball tournament, parade, bake sale, vendors, car show, burnout contest, ZooMobile, Bingo, alumni banquet and Marion Fire Department social.

A Community Church Service is held on Sunday, June 16th in the new gym at the Marion School.

The Marion School was organized in 1887 and began classes that fall.  Consolidation brought the community of Dolton into the Marion School District, beginning with the high school in 1944.  Further consolidation brought the community of Monroe into the district in 1965.

The Marion-Hurley Cobra football team captured the 2008 State B title.  Also in 2008, the Marion FFA received national honors, placing 3rd as a team in the nation and claiming the #1 Individual in the nation honor.

In 1995, an addition was completed including a new band and chorus room, restrooms, concession stand and a second gymnasium. Having two gyms available has provided additional activity opportunities for all ages.

Marion is also known for racing.  Thunder Valley has been a popular spot to see, ‘how

fast it will go.’  Wieman Land and Auction is also located in Marion and many a HUGE farm machinery auctions, have been held on the outskirts of town.

We salute you Marion, and to tell you the truth, we’re all probably a little bit jealous of the tight knit small town feel you all woke up with this morning.

Have a great weekend celebrating with family and friends!  Marion, South Dakota, our Small Town of the Day.
