Small Town of the Day – Beresford, SD

BMCT.net

Watchdogs.  I’ve always wondered how they came up with the name Watchdogs.  Talking about Beresford.  Oh, Beresford is our Small Town of the Day.  Beresford, South Dakota.  They’re about 32 miles south of Sioux Falls, at the corner of I-29 and Highway 46.

I’ve been to Beresford quite a few times. I’ve bought several cars from Jerry’s Chevrolet in Beresford.  And we cut to the river on highway 46 so we get through there quite frequently.

Beresford is as Northeast in Union County, South Dakota as you can get. Jordan from Hartford called in and said, Knutson’s Western Store is a good stop in Beresford.  Saddles, Tack and other western wear are what they deal in.

According to Wikipedia,

Before the city was incorporated, the town was known as Paris, Dakota Territory. The city was renamed after Lord Charles Beresford and was formally incorporated on July 12, 1884.

Mr. John O’Rielly hauled the first load of lumber for the new Beresford Settlement from Hawarden Iowa. Mr. John O’Rielly established the O’Rielley Dray Lines. His son George D. O’Rielly would later take over the family business and start the Beresford Tea and Coffee House. George’s wife Amelia Guenzel was the first female mortician in the state of South Dakota and her father George S. Guenzel started the first Funeral Parlor and Furniture Store in the town 1885. Mr. George Guenzel’s best friends and main competitor Mr. Wass started a funeral business a few years later in 1887. The two rivals would help each other through thick and thin, and remained best friends until their deaths. George had the first rubber tired vehicle in the town. The great grand son Mr. Robert Corey of Canton would keep an automtive business in the town until the late 1980s.

It is also mainly a Swiss settlement.

Oh, and I didn’t make a mistake.  It is the Watchdogs!  That’s the name of the mascot for Beresford Schools.

As is the case with many Small Towns, Beresford has quite a history.  Read that story here.

Just got off the phone with Jay from Slumberland.  They have a big distribution store and showroom in Beresford.  (and a sign with the temperature on it) Jay mentioned Emily’s and Touch of Dutch restaurants (I have ate at both, or is it eaten) He also mentioned Bert’s Sports Bar and the City Bar downtown!  He also mentioned that South Dakota’s own Dustin Evans and Good Tims are playing Beresford July 27th.  That’ll be a party!

How about you?  Anything else to add?

According to Beresford.com:

Location!  Location!!  Location!!!!  Beresford has the unique advantage of being located on the I-29 corridor at the intersection of Highway 46.  We are just 25 minutes south of Sioux Falls, 20 minutes north of Vermillion, 40 minutes north of Sioux City and 45 minutes east of Yankton.

Sounds like Beresford has a nice golf course too!  Get out to The Bridges and knock it around a little this afternoon!
