One trend continued while another concluded in the Sioux Falls Skyforce 115-99 win over the Delaware 87ers Friday night at the Sanford Pentagon.

When Sioux Falls (5-2) has claimed victory this season they have vanquished each opponent by at least ten points. Those five wins have come in succession vaulting the Skyforce to the top of the NBADL Central Division.

The streak that was snapped albeit barely is that Delaware (4-4) had scored over 100 in each of their first seven games. Coming into the tussle the Sevens had scored an average of 108 points per game while hitting 11 from downtown per game. On two separate occasions in the first quarter the Sevens took a one point lead. Otherwise Sioux Falls held the lead for the duration of the contest.

Emphasizing perimeter defense to prevent Delaware from connecting from the outside went a long way to securing victory. Also Coach Dan Craig said early on things were pretty shaky for both teams. “A lot of missed layups in the first quarter made things kind of weird at the start. Once our defense dialed in we kept them out of the paint and made them take contested two’s. We know how well they shoot the three as a team. It was a focus for us and we did well with it tonight.”

As proof Delaware was 28 percent from downtown and 42 percent overall. Plus the ‘Force shot better (60.5 percent) from the floor than they did from the line (55 percent).

Greg Whittington was tops in scoring with 28 points, adding 7 rebounds and 6 steals. The former Georgetown Hoya credits the team concepts for being ready on defense. “The coaches put us in spots where we can challenge the other team. I was in the right spot at the right time to get steals.” See the thievery and what results on the video below. Tre Kelley came away with 20 points and 10 assists and Rodney McGruder added a season high 20 points for the Skyforce.

As the two most highly regarded prospects for the Sevens, Jordan McRae led the parade with 22 points and Sean Kilpatrick poured in 19 points. The same two teams will be back at it on Saturday night for their final meeting in Sioux Falls this season.
