A Sioux Falls woman who went to a hotel in the southwest part of the city Monday night to talk with her former boyfriend was attacked and sexually assaulted, according to police. But a hotel guest heard the commotion and came to the woman's rescue.

Officer Sam Clemens says the 29-year-old woman was pushed, strangled and sexually assaulted, and a guest in the next room heard her screaming, and told the front desk to call police.

Clemens says when the next-door guest knocked on the door, the woman came to the door and asked him to help, so he took her into his room.

The former boyfriend left the hotel and by Tuesday morning he was still being sought, although police know who they are looking for.

The woman was checked out at a hospital, but Clemens says her injuries were not serious.

Clemens says the 45-year-old Minnesota man in the next room did the right thing by getting police to come to the hotel, and he calls the man's efforts "phenomenal."

He says the woman told police her 35-year-old former boyfriend was intoxicated.

Police were called around 12:30am Tuesday.
