Gaylynn Huber, Director of Sioux Falls streets, says there are fewer potholes in the city this summer.

"I can tell that over the last five years---just the preventative maintenance that we've done probably reduced our calls by at least 50 percent. You can see from that data if you do your preventative maintenance and keep the water from getting below it---that does a lot to save the roads."

Huber says residents are continuing to call the Pothole Hotline at 605-367-8002.

"We probably take about five or six calls every day. I have crews that go out and take care of those potholes on a daily basis. Once we're done with those, we know of other areas that need fixing and the street crews take care of them."

Aside from potholes, Huber says his street crews are also repairing Frost Boils.

"A pothole takes place when the surface is breaking up because water gets underneath the surface. It gets loose. We pull it out an put material back in. A Frost Boil takes place when the base goes bad. You'll see these when you're driving along. You'll actually see the gravel and clay come pushing through the surface of the street. Those are a bit more maintenance intensive to fix."

Right now, Huber says 50 Frost Boils are on the list to repair in Sioux Falls.
