A 16-year-old Sioux Falls boy was locked up early Wednesday after police say an attempted shoplifting at a grocery store turned into a robbery.

Officer Sam Clemens says police were called after midnight to the Hy-Vee store at 10th and Kiwanis, where he says two juveniles allegedly were attempting to shoplift. He says one got away and the other was detained by store employees, who said he had two bottles of liquor with him.

Clemens says the teen punched a female employee several times, but other employees intervened and the 16-year-old was taken to the office where police took him into custody.

Clemens says the teen, who had been drinking, was taken to the Juvenile Detention Center and charged with second-degree robbery, simple assault, underage consumption and a curfew violation.

The other juvenile who was allegedly involved left the store.
