Sioux Falls Police Information Officer Sam Clemens says a local resident was taken in during a phone scam.

"We had a guy that received a phone call from somebody that said they were from the government. The caller said he had won or was going to be awarded 9,000 dollars. This person needed the victim's account information and needed some money forwarded to them to process the fees. It turned out this was a scam. The Sioux Falls resident sent 270 dollars and didn't get anything in return. That's when the person knew it was a scam."

Clemens urges residents to think twice about sending money to someone you don't know.

"It's always a good idea for people to reminder there are others out there wanting to scam them. They will take advantage of people in order to get that money. The bottom line is if it sounds too good too be true, it probably is."

Once the money is sent, Clemens says it's really tough to get it back.
