South Dakotans are at the crossroads of unintended consequences and cover your hind parts with the recent passage of Marsy’s Law. It makes police reporting more vague.

The Sioux Falls Police Department has submitted a District Beat Map to define where crimes are committed. Each segment of the city has a numerical code attached to it to ostensibly blur the lines of where crimes are committed in order to protect crime victim’s rights.

Not that all communities are following this procedure. Places like Mitchell and Huron think measures such as this are a little extreme.

Exploration of every possible legal maneuver is now underway. Hopefully the boundaries of the new amendment will soon be fully realized.

For now, Sioux Falls is taking the cautious approach. Each segment on the map has its own color and number to guide people to where incidents occur.

Of course as the city grows and the law is more fully defined, this map is subject to change. If you wish to study it feel free to do so.
