Pack your bags and grab the kids! The vacation of your dreams is about to begin! Just make sure you have properly secured your home.

Sioux Falls Police Officer Sam Clemens offers these tips!

"Make sure the doors are locked whether it's a door to your house or garage. If you have secured all windows and doors, there is a good chance you're going to keep your property inside where it belongs. Additionally, if you have a sliding glass door, leave a pole in the track to prevent the door from being forced open."

Clemens says some people don't think they will ever be robbed.

"Maybe it's people that haven't had a bad experience which is a good thing. But they just don't think their home or property would be vandalized. Some residents become more trusting. We have a great community and for the most part---things go well and we don't have issues like that. But the fact of the matter is we have people out there looking to take advantage of whatever situation they come across. It's quick and easy. They check a house door garage door. If it's open they grab whatever they can and flee."

Aside from securing all windows and doors, it's also important to temporarily stop the mail and newspaper. You should also ask a friend or neighbor to monitor your home.
