Sioux Falls Police Information Officer Sam Clemens says a man was causing problems at Casey's General Store in East Sioux Falls on Tuesday and wouldn't leave.

"When we got there, we found him in a car with a six-year-old girl. It turns out the suspect is friends with the girl's mother. He had picked her up from school, ran out of gas and ended up at the store. While officers were dealing with him, they found out the employees wanted him charged for failure to vacate. Police officers smelled alcohol on him. Eventually, he was also charged with DWI.

That's when officers discovered meth in the car.

"While police were talking to the girl, they saw a small bag of meth near the center console which was right near where the girl was seated. The girl was taken out of the car. She was turned over to a relative."

Clemens says 45-year-old Omar Reuben Thornton of Garretson was also charged with two counts of child endangerment, unrestrained child, open container and possession of a controlled substance.

A bottle of rum was found underneath the driver's seat.
