The Sioux Falls police were busy last Friday night, busy handing out tickets to drivers around the Sioux Empire.

The Sioux Falls PD added 14 extra officers to the roads in an unannounced saturation patrol that took place from 7 P.M. to 3 A.M. on Friday, January 15. During that time period they ended up issuing 170 citations.

The main focus of the patrol that evening was to locate impaired drivers, and officers did make 9 DWI arrests that night. They also ended up issuing numerous speeding, seat belt and driver’s license violations.

Sioux Falls Police Officer Sam Clemens said, “Periodically we’ll announce some of the saturation patrols, but then we’ll also have unannounced saturation patrols.”

170 citations is not out of the ordinary, according to Clemens. "We’re just trying to make sure people are following the rules of the road and not drinking and driving.”

The Sioux Falls police department plans to stick with the saturation patrols in the future in an attempt to keep these type of violations from happening.
