SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - A Sioux Falls man who was caught on videotape shooting and killing his neighbor has been sentenced to 80 years in prison.

Thirty-year-old Peter Mayen pleaded guilty in September to first-degree manslaughter in the October 2011 killing of 51-year-old Bruce Walters. Prosecutors in return dropped a murder charge.

Mayen is a Sudanese refugee. The Argus Leader reports (http://argusne.ws/WyH2S4) that Mayen and his friends and family said during his sentencing hearing on Tuesday that Walters had harassed them with racial epithets and threats of violence. Prosecutor Aaron McGowan said the dispute was mutual, prompting Walters to install a surveillance camera on his garage that filmed the shooting.

Judge Brad Zell said race obviously played a factor in the dispute but that justice was blind to race.
