Sioux Falls Fire Rescue responded to a report of a structure fire at 115 S. Walts Ave. at approximately 9:15 p.m. Tuesday evening.

The first arriving unit found a fully involved single car detached garage to the rear of this residence. The fire was controlled within approximately 15 minutes, but due to the intensity of the fire, one adjoining detached garage was damaged by direct flame impingement while two other detached garages had siding damaged by convected heat from the fire.

Also involved in the fire due to direct flame contact was an adjoining wood fence and a van parked in the driveway at this residence.

After arriving on scene, Battalion 1 witnessed several electrical explosions as the fire impinged upon a power pole adjacent to the garage. The fire extended up the power pole, burning through several of the power lines. Power was lost to six residences on Walts Ave. due to the damage.

Xcel Energy was dispatched to the scene and after assessing the damage, assisted Sioux Falls Fire Rescue in extinguishing the remainder of the pole fire.  Crewmen from Xcel made immediate repairs to restore power to five of the six homes without power.  The involved residence would require additional work to restore power.  All residents were able to return to their homes after the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by Fire Inspector John Wagner.
