On Tuesday night at approximately 9:30 PM Sioux Falls Fire Rescue responded to a report of a fire in a two story apartment building. The resident was the reporting party and stated that a mattress was on fire and the entire building was full of smoke.

The first arriving fire unit found smoke coming from a lower level window that appeared to be broken due to the fire. Crews were able to enter the structure and had the fire under control within the first six minutes on scene. All residents of the building were able to exit the building before fire units arrived on scene.

One occupant was seen by Paramedics Plus Ambulance but refused treatment and found private transportation to the receiving hospital.

The fire was confined to the room of origin which sustained moderate fire damage. There was smoke damage throughout the eight unit apartment building. None of the residents were allowed to occupy their apartments for the night and they are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue responded with five fire trucks, three support vehicles, and twenty-three firefighters. Sioux Falls Fire Rescue was assisted by Sioux Falls Police Department, Paramedics Plus Ambulance, Mid-American Energy, Xcel Energy, Sioux Falls Animal Control and the American Red Cross.

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue would like to remind residents that properly installed and operational smoke detectors are the best way to prevent injury and death due to fires.
