Sioux Falls Fire Battalion Chief Mike Top says fire investigators have found the cause of an apartment fire in Sioux Falls.

"Investigators went back to the apartment about 7:00 AM on Monday. After interviews and following fire patterns along with other evidence---it was rendered that the fire had started on the third floor deck on the outside of the building. The cause of the fire was improperly discarded smoking material---a cigar in potting soil."

Top says the damage to the Sioux Falls apartment is substantial.

"The north half of the roof of the structure is gone. A lot of that roof fell into third floor apartments. A rough estimate of the damage would be over one million dollars. Lots of water and smoke damage throughout the rest of the building."

Top says the fire has been ruled accidental and no charges are expected to be filed.
