It would be wonderful if someday hunger was no longer an issue in our city, state and country. Unfortunately that time is not now. Feeding South Dakota's Food Pantry program has seen a 15% increase over last year, in the number of people they've helped so far this year.

The numbers haven't changed much over the last decade; 1 in 8 South Dakotans still struggle with hunger and 1 in 6 children still go to bed with empty tummies. Four counties in South Dakota are in the top 10 poorest counties in the country.

Thankfully, organizations like the Boy Scouts step up with activities like this Saturday's (October 28) Scouting for Food event. If you haven't received a reminder at your home yet, you will soon.

Boy Scout  and Cub Scout troops are asking you to collect non-perishable food items like canned vegetables, soups, chili, fruit, and cereal, pasta and rice, and leave them on your doorstep for the Scouts to collect.

All food items will be given to Feeding South Dakota to stock the shelves at the Food Pantry, which distributes around 145,000 pounds of food per month in the Sioux Falls and surrounding area.

Last year the "Scouting for Food" drive helped to provide almost 6,000 meals to hungry people through the Feeding South Dakota Food Pantry.
