The dog days of summer are here and the start of school is inching closer. If you have started back-to-school shopping yet, you know that it's not getting any cheaper. According to Backpack Index survey from Huntington Bank in Columbus, Ohio, the average elementary schooler's supplies for this year will run $649; for middle school students it's $941; and for high school kids it's $1,402.

While it seems a little high for the South Dakota average, here's the top 10 things to buy in August to most bang for your buck.

  • 1. Older Computers -- Because computer companies are ramping up to release new models, they're more likely to be trying to blow out their old models at low prices. Hint: Ask about a 2014 or early 2015 model. You might be surprised at what might not be on display.
  • 2. Laptops -- Big stores drop the prices on laptops with their back-to-school deals.
  • 3. Kid's Clothing -- Every clothing outlet is trying to get your attention right now so you're in the driver's seat when it comes to sales. As a parent, I know kids go through clothes too quickly so economy is king when shopping. Look for the 50 - 75% off clearance racks, and get a size or two larger from what your child is wearing right now and you'll be smiling at the beginning of next summer when your daughter needs the latest Justice shorts.
  • 4. Linens and Storage Containers -- These items (among others) are aimed at college kids getting ready for dorm life. Also watch for deals on snap-together book shelves.
  • 5. Barbecue Grills -- Store managers do not want to store unsold grills over the winter. Watch for significant price drops as stores try to unload them before summer ends. That $800 smoker just might be more affordable than you think.
  • 6. Camping Gear -- If your existing tent has a new tear that you've been optimistically calling a "moon roof", now is the time for new one. End of summer means lower prices on tents, sleeping bags, and air mattresses.
  • 7. Shorts -- Fall styles are moving into the stores so now is the time for shorts and tanks. September is usually the best month to golf so why not save some money now?
  • 8. Lawn Mowers -- It's a bit early to talk about switching the lawn mower's parking spot in the garage for the snow blower, but the time is coming - quickly. And right now, there are plenty of deals on new mowers and trimmers.
  • 9. Luggage -- End of summer travel season and students heading back to college means the deals are out there on new luggage, baggage, and other essential travel gear.
  • 10. Bikinis and trunks -- Yea! It's bikini season (flash) Aaawww...it's over. Clearance racks are stuffed with swimwear so now is the time to pounce on a deal. On the bonus side, buying a swimsuit now in a certain size means you'll have extra incentive to maintain your weight, or even lose some, during the long South Dakota winter.
