If you call South Dakota home, or if you grew up in South Dakota you know that this coming weekend is a BIG one! It's the pheasant opener for South Dakota. Hunters from all over the U.S. and from around the world will be coming to South Dakota to hunt the Ring-neck Pheasant!  With that in mind, here are 7 things you should know for this weekends hunt.

1. Daily Limit: 3 rooster pheasants.

2. There is a 'possession limit.'According to The South Dakota Game Fish and Parks,

15 rooster pheasants, taken according to the daily limit. The limit accrues at the rate of 3 birds a day, and 15 birds may not be possessed until after the fifth day of hunting.

3. If you're gonna carry a gun, you'll need a license. License cost and details here.

4. You can hunt at 12 noon, on opening weekend through local sunset. When the suns down, you're done. Not when it's dark, but at sunset. Know the sunset time for your area. It'll vary from Sioux Falls, to Parkston, to Kennebec.

5. Kids like to come along. If you have younger kids, include them on a portion of the hunt. Just make sure they have some blaze orange on so other hunters can see them. Extra eyes and feet are handy when it comes to finding a downed bird.

6. Shoot where their going, not where their at. Pheasants can fly about a million miles an hour. So make sure you lead 'em while their in the air. Otherwise, it's a 3 shell donation to the hunting gods and ridicule from your former hunters.

7. Young kids in back, parents and grandparents get dibs. If your riding in the back of the pickup that's one of the rules. Don't be lazy. Watch that barrel and pay attention to safety. Other house rules, the landowner always picks the radio station in the pickup and the landowner is always right!

Pheasant Season opens Saturday, October 18th, 2014 in South Dakota.
