SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - Republicans and Democrats are getting together in Sioux Falls Thursday for a social event honoring former South Dakota governors Dick Kneip and Bill Janklow.

Organizers say both governors worked hard to reach across party lines for the good of the whole state.

Maximum Promotions owner Mark Nelsen says the idea came when he was looking at an old beer poster that poked fun at Republicans and Democrats by having their "donkey" and "elephant" symbols looking quite stubborn. The next image had the two enjoying a beer together and having a conversation.

Nelson figured the 1960s marketing piece could be a good way to get a conversation going today.

The event begins at 5 p.m. at the Holiday Inn City Center.
