Multiple levels of government in South Dakota are worried about sales tax trends. One area that continues to rise is building projects permits in Sioux Falls.

Since 2013, Sioux Falls has broken the record for the valuation of building permits in the city every year. At that time, the high water mark was $588.2 million. Every successive year since then, the number has grown.

In 2014 the number topped $600 million for the first time. Over $55 million was added to the total in 2015. The $700 million mark was reached last year. With two weeks left in the year the total stood at $720,369,333.

Mike Cooper who is the Director of Planning and Building Services cited in a press release the need for housing in the city as the foundation for the big number.

“It’s clear Sioux Falls is fostering an incredible quality of life when nee homes are one of the biggest drivers of growth in our community. People often are choosing to live in Sioux Falls first and foremost and then seeking out job opportunities and other was to contribute.”

The statistics show that 1,222 multiple-family units, 745 single-family homes and 422 townhomes were permitted in 2017. Mayor Mike Huether, credited many for the bold vision of a better Sioux Falls in the building boom.

“The confidence, the momentum and record breakers just keep growing and I can’t thank the builders, investors and dreamers enough for making it happen.”

Healthcare expansion in Sioux Falls was also a major part of the new construction permit valuation standard. The additional Avera Health expansion located at 69th and Louise was the entity that vaulted the number to new heights as $24 million was permitted to establish the beginnings of the facility on the 82-acre plot.
