BROOKINGS, SD — Five Jackrabbits scored in double figures and two posted double-doubles as South Dakota State cruised to an 83-62 win over Southwest Minnesota State for its first win of the season in front of 2,521 fans at Frost Arena.

Along with the offensive explosion, the Jackrabbits finished with a 48-37 edge on the glass in improving to 1-3 on the season.

“That’s what we should do to teams, we should destroy teams on the glass, when you’re starting 6-8, 6-8, 6-9, that’s what should happen,” head coach Scott Nagy said.

The Mustangs, who fall to 1-2, finished the game 24 for 72 from the field, 33 percent, and went just 3 for 18 from 3-point range, 16.7 percent. The Jackrabbits shot a season-high 52.5 percent from the floor, 31 of 59, and went 7 of 22 from long range, 31.8 percent.

Jordan Dykstra led the Jacks on both fronts, scoring a game-high 21 points and grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. Cody Larson also posted a double-double, the first of his career, finishing with career-highs with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Brayden Carlson scored 16 points, Chad White 13 and Anders Broman a career-high 10 points off the bench.

Cole Martin led the Mustangs with 11 points in the loss, with Mitch Weg leading the way with seven rebounds to go with his eight points.

A Marcus Heemstra layup with 15 minutes 41 seconds left in the first half broke a 6-6 tie and sparked a 15-0 SDSU run and the Jacks never trailed again.

SMSU cut the lead to four points at 39-35 early in the second half, but a 12-0 run put any hopes of a Mustang upset to rest and the Jacks steadily increased their lead to the final margin of 21 points.

SDSU returns to the road on Thursday to face a familiar coach on a new team, as the Jacks travel to Lubbock, Texas to take on Tubby Smith’s Texas Tech Red Raiders.

“Our players are used to playing Tubby’s teams,” Nagy said. “Obviously he was at Minnesota, so we’re going to see a lot of the same stuff that we saw at Minnesota, but we’ve played enough of those teams and seen enough of it and been successful at the guarantee games that I think we’ll go in there with a lot of confidence.”

The Jacks and Red Raiders tip from United Spirit Arena at 7 p.m.
