A 14-year-old Sioux Falls boy was caught stealing items from unlocked cars on Saturday.

"We had somebody that noticed a person was walking down the street and checking car doors," Police Spokesman Sam Clemens explained. "They did the right thing in calling it in. Officers were able to find him at 9th Street and Prairie Avenue. The caller said the suspect had a backpack and provided a good description. An officer saw the person with the same backpack. Inside they found a handgun, some headphones, and a cell phone. They were able to find out where the handgun and cell phone were stolen from. It turns out the owner had left it in his unlocked car. They teen was arrested for grand theft and numerous other charges."

In a different part of Sioux Falls on Saturday, Clemens says teen thieves were ripping off more unlocked vehicles.

"We had a caller that told us a car drove up and six people gout out. They began checking car doors. Everybody took off running when officers arrived. But, officers were able to catch two of them. It turned out these two 15-year-old's were involving with going through these different cars.
When the officers found the car they were arrived in---around that same time the owner called and reported it stolen. They were both charged with entering those other vehicles and possession of a stolen vehicle."

Clemens urges residents to lock their car doors or risk someone getting into the vehicle and taking what they want.
