Police Have Winter Driving Advice

Police say it happens every year with the first snowfall of the season: people don't remember how to drive in snow.

Lieutenant Jerome Miller of the Sioux Falls Police Department says when snow falls, you need to allow yourself extra time to get to your destination, plan your route if roads are slippery, give yourself more stopping distance, slow down and pay attention to your driving.

Police Information Officer Sam Clemens echoes Miller's thoughts, saying the first snow brings, as he puts it, "a ton of crashes."

Clemens says, too, that the increase in crashes comes because motorists don't give themselves enough distance, they drive too fast and they can't stop.

Police say winter driving skills can be forgotten over the summer, so people need to remind themselves to drive carefully when the first snow of the season falls.
