Parents Warned of Posting Cellphone Pics

This warning to parents is real. If you post pics of your children on your social media pages or other online photo albums, it’s stunning how easy it is for tech-savvy strangers to find out exactly where those pictures were taken or where you live.

It’s not a new warning as this safety tip was shared on the internet a few years ago, as well. But, with new technology and “smarter” phones, it’s becoming increasingly easier to for hackers to not only pinpoint a certain location, but locate where a child’s bedroom is within a home.

The startling video, by NBCActionNews, shows how easy it is for predators to gain information you are not intending to share. Disabling the “geotagging” or, GPS feature on your mobile device is recommended.

Basically, what you’re doing is you’re telling the bad guy … where [you] live and recreate.” -  Officer Mark Chudik of the Leawood, Kansas police dept.

Here’ how to disable the GPS feature on basic models of cell phones:

  1. Hit “Menu” button on the phone.
  2. Scroll to and select the “Applications” or “Programs” option.
  3. Locate and select the GPS application that you use on the phone (such as Google Maps).
  4. Open the application and allow the application to load up.
  5. Press the “Menu” button.
  6. Scroll to the “GPS” power section.
  7. Clear the “GPS” check box or select the option “Turn off GPS.”
