The first real snowfall of the season also brings the first fatality as a passenger was thrown from an SUV in a multi-vehicle accident on I-29 south of Brookings early Saturday afternoon.

Authorities say a Chevrolet Suburban was northbound on I-29 when they lost control while passing another vehicle, went through the median and into the southbound lane, hitting the rear axle of a semi. Another vehicle then hit the Suburban. 11-year old Jack Lawrence of Beresford died from his injuries after being thrown from the Suburban.

There were seven passengers in the Suburban. Three people suffered injuries in the accident. No other information has been released.

It's an awful reminder that even vehicles with four wheel drive are susceptible to losing control in the snow and on ice. Do not over drive the road conditions.

Snow will continue to taper off across the region through the evening  and a snow alert has been issued. Plows are out clearing away the snow, but roads will remain slick.

Please allow yourself plenty of time to get to your destination and drive safe.
