South Dakota Tornado: 1884
One of the earliest known tornado photographs was taken in South Dakota in 1884 and retouched and sold as a postcard.
According to NOAA, the photo was taken 22 miles southwest of Howard, SD. on August 28th, 1884.
However, the very first known photograph of a tornado was taken on April 26, 1884 at Garnett, Kansas. Amateur photographer A.A. Adams just had enough time to assemble his cumbersome box camera and capture this singular image:
By today’s standards, the term “storm chasers” probably wouldn’t apply to the gentlemen who took these photographs, but they certainly added to the mystery and history of these powerful ‘twisters of the plains.’
