New Time Magazine Editor has Roots in Pierre

RAPID CITY - The new executive editor of Time magazine says she'll bring a Midwestern perspective to the job that she cultivated in South Dakota.

Martha Nelson tells the Rapid City Journal that when she thinks about something that might go on the cover, she's not thinking about "a 40-square mile block of Manhattan." Instead, she says she's thinking about the people she grew up with in South Dakota.

The 60-year-old was raised partly in Pierre. Her mother, Pauline Donaldson, still lives in Rapid City. The family also spent seven years in Canada.

Nelson is Time's first female executive editor. She previously worked as an editor at Savvy Magazine, Women's Sports Fitness and Ms. Magazine, among others.
