The latest summer time teen rage around the country is something called "Mocking." Little do they know though, it's something you and I have been doing for years, only we know it as spending time lying in a hammock.

The website MinnPost recently did an article on all the hammocks (or mocks) that have been popping up in parks and neighborhoods across the Twin Cities area. The author of the article, Jim Walsh, said sporting goods stores are actually having a hard time keeping hammocks in stock.

"Hang, chill and relax are the words used most by the ‘mockers to describe their attraction to the non-activity of whiling away hours in the trees, talking with their friends, and listening to music, the birds, water fountains, and rain."

In fact, 'mocking has reached the point in the Twin Cities where they're calling it 'The Summer of the teenage tree people.'

One teenager interviewed for the story described it this way,

“You just come and chill. Pretty much everyone I know does it. When people want to do something, but they don’t know what they want to do, you can kind of just hang out and say you’re doing something. I’ve got my bike and my backpack and my hammock and I’m good.”

Here's how another teenager described the experience,

“It’s good to be with your friends in a circle, because you can all see each other and we’re not always on our phones all the time. It’s something different. Instead of hanging out at someone’s house, we hang in the trees."

In my opinion, anytime we can convince teenagers to spend less time on the phone, that's a good thing! I say it's time we expand the movement to the Sioux Falls area. Who's with me?
