Nebraska Lawmakers Vote to Repeal Death Penalty
The Nebraska legislature voted Wednesday to abolish that state's death penalty and replace it with life without parole. The Unicam passed the measure with a 32 to 15 vote.
Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts is expected to veto the bill. Supporters think that there is enough lawmaker support to override a gubernatorial veto.
The bill was sponsored by Senator Ernie Chambers of Omaha. The Lincoln Journal-Star reports that Chambers said that if the death penalty is repealed, "Nebraska will step into history. It would be the first so-called conservative state to do so."
