Over the weekend I pulled off the bike trail just past Rotary Park in eastern Sioux Falls. East 26th Street was to my left and I-229 was off to my right.

Even though there was the hustle and bustle of the city whizzing by on the roadways overhead, it was amazingly soothing to stop and linger on the banks of the Big Sioux River.

My thoughts turned to a tour I had taken of Minnesota naturalist and author Sigurd Olson's cabin just outside of Ely, Minnesota on Burntside Lake. He called this oasis “Listening Point”.

As I stood there staring at the rapids I was reminded of the reason Olson gave for the naming of that place.

“I named this place Listening Point because only when one comes to listen, only when one is aware and still, can things be seen and heard. Everyone has a listening point somewhere. It does not have to be in the north or close to the wilderness, but someplace of quiet where the universe can be contemplated with awe.”

I very much relate to Sigurd's message. But I also concluded that even with the sounds of the city all around, it the right moment, you can visit your own 'Listening Point'.
