The next time you visit the world's only Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota it will look a little different.

The Corn Palace is in the process of getting a facelift. The make over has been going on for the past year and is just about complete.

New domes constructed by a Minneapolis-based fabricator arrived in April, but were just placed high-a-top the Corn Palace on Monday, July 27. The old domes were removed last July. Reinforcements were put in the domes over the last few weeks, following concerns they might not be able to hold up during some of South Dakota's harsh weather conditions throughout the year.

Mitchell City Council Member Randy Doescher said, "We wanted to make sure that they were rated to stay up in the air 50 foot and they won't come flying down like a bunch of knives."

Prior to Monday, the new Corn Palace domes had been sitting in the street for months.

On Saturday a new exterior sign was installed, as well as, a balcony in the front of the building. The inside was also opened up. The entire multi-million dollar renovation project should be completed by the end of this week.
