Memory Lane Monday: Remember Teddy Ruxpin

“Hi my name is Teddy Ruxpin can you and I be friends”?

Taking a trip down memory lane with a bear that could hypnotize a classroom with his desire to befriend us, and story telling skills.

I remember this bear from the Saturday morning cartoon commercial, but I was never one of the “lucky” kids who owned a storytelling talking bear.

I do remember when my friend hijacked his younger brother Ruxpin tapes, and put some disturbing messages on them.

My friend wasn’t the only person who has a twisted sense of humor.

In the video below a dad and son have a little too much fun taking apart, and then destroying our wide eyed toy bear.

According to Wikipedia here is some brief Ruxpin history:

Teddy Ruxpin is an animatronic children’s toy in the form of a talking bear. The bear’s mouth and eyes moved while “reading” stories that were played on an audio tape cassette deck built into its back. It was created by Ken Forsse with later assistance by Larry Larsen and John Davies, and the first version of the toy was designed by the firm RKS Design.  Later versions would use a digital cartridge in place of a cassette. At the peak of his popularity, Teddy Ruxpin became the best-selling toy of 1985 and 1986, and the newest version was awarded the 2006 Animated Interactive Plush Toy of the Year by Creative Child Magazine A cartoon based on the characters debuted in 1987.

There was also a Teddy Ruxpin cartoon in the 80’s, that helped push the push the popularity of this plush pal.

Thanks for your friendship fuzzy bear, and storytelling over the years.

If you would like to purchase a vintage Teddy Ruxpin, I found all kinds on ebay.

You can still by Ruxpin parts to rebuild, and maintain your current bear.

I also found original Ruxpins for sale with the real deal box included Teddy like this one here.
