Lucie Silvas made her U.S. television debut on Monday morning (Aug. 27) while performing on Today. The British singer-songwriter, who now calls Nashville home, sang her fiery new single "Kite" off her recently released independent project E.G.O.

Introduced to the Today stage by co-hosts Sheinelle Jones and Jenna Bush Hager, the anchors marveled at the image of Silvas' new album displayed on a billboard in Times Square.

"That was the craziest thing I've ever experienced," Silvas gushes. "It was very surreal."

She then launched into an energetic performance of "Kite," a song she wrote that details a fiercely independent woman in a relationship. With infectious guitar parts, a memorable drum beat and Silvas' smoky vocals, the debut Today performance entranced.

“I knew ‘Kite’ would be that first song people would hear from E.G.O.,” Silvas previously tells People about the debut single. “As a song, it felt liberating, fun and exciting to write. ‘Kite’ as a song talks about being independent and the partner you’re with is gonna find themselves in an impossible position if they want someone they have to control.”

Silvas herself is an independent artist who moved to the U.S. after leaving a label deal overseas. In an interview with Taste of Country, she admits that she didn't feel independent until she left her label.

"I did start feeling independent as soon as I came out of a record deal in England. I didn’t do well with a big label. I just felt ... it felt alien to me. It didn’t coincide with all the thoughts I had about being an artist — some people are very good at cross-pollinating being a business and being a creative artist," she admits.

"It’s taken me a long time to figure that out. I never felt better then when I started doing music on my own terms. And that was when I had no cheerleaders around me. Weirdly enough, as soon as all those people went away I felt stronger, which is strange."

Silvas' new album, E.G.O., is out now.
