I just learned about this movie that is having it's South Dakota premiere Tuesday, and it looks awesome, I can't wait to see it. The film is called Songs My Brothers Taught Me. It was shot on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

The movie was at this year's Sundance Film Festival and the Cannes Film Festival. Written and directed by Chinese-born Chloe Zhao, the movie is a coming of age story about a brother and sister on the Pine Ridge Reservation.

"Songs My Brothers Taught Me is a contemplation of the time I spent on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation during the four years of making this film," Zhao said. "During my time on Pine Ridge, as I became friends with some of the Lakota people living there, I became increasingly intrigued and almost envious of the deep connection they have to their homes, families, communities and their land. This bone-deep attachment also has its consequences, and over time I also became aware of the various struggles and isolation they face because of it."

Most of the actors in the film are from Pine Ridge, including star John Reddy, who plays Johnny. He is Lakota and was born and raised on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. He was discovered by the director through his high school yearbook photo.

Jashaun St. John plays Johnny's sister. She is Lakota and also was born and raised on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and she goes to Wolf Creek School.

Cinema Falls is hosting the South Dakota premiere of the move in Sioux Falls Tuesday, June 8. with the director and some of the cast.

Check out the trailer for the film below and you'll want to see it as much as me.
