Look Up From Your Cell Phone. Life Is Passing You By.

‘Look Up’ is a lesson taught to us through a love story, in a world where we continue to find ways to make it easier for us to connect with one another, but always results in us spending more time alone.

The five minute film has already been viewed over 11 million times, but the irony is that it’s being shared through a multitude of social media sites and viewed on cell phones and tablets.

Due to the nature of my job, I admit that I have to spend an inordinate amount of time online. It’s the nature of the business. I need to be aware of breaking news, changing weather, information that may be helpful and important to our listeners.

But the majority of the people that the film is intended for are not in my line of work. They don’t need it for work purposes. It’s their way of connecting with people. And in fact, it’s making them disconnect from people.

Facebook has been a wonderful tool for me to get in touch with old classmates and friends from the neighborhood I grew up in in Minneapolis but also to network with people in music and listeners. At the same time, the ‘conversations’ I have with people online pale by comparison to sitting around a bonfire on a Saturday night with friends.

Bottom line, use the connectivity available through social media, texting, e-mail, etc. but then put the device away and go live life. Interact with real human beings. Live. Love. Laugh. A lesson we can all learn, no matter what generation we’re from.
