Local Sports Highlights from the Weekend

First, Augustana’s Michael Willman, Jr. became the Vikings first pitcher to throw a no-hitter since 2006 on Sunday against Morningside. Willman struck out 11 batters, and Augustana extended their winning streak to 15 games.

The Vikings travel to St. Cloud on Wednesday.

Second, USF’s Priscilla Quintana hit a walk-off home run in the tenth inning on Sunday against Northern State to give the Cougars a win in their last game of the season. USF finished 15-27 overall and 10-18 in the NSIC.

Third, USD’s softball game won a thriller on Saturday, rallying from a 4-0 deficit on Senior Day to win 8-7 in 11 innings against UMKC. Morgan Hancock scored on a throwing error in the 11th inning.

Fourth, SDSU splits with Oakland in baseball, improving to 21-14 overall and 7-5 in the Summit League. SDSU starts a four game series on Friday with Western Illinois.

Fifth, Sioux Falls resident Brian Hansen named ambassador for Head Up, an NFL initiative that promotes safety in youth football.

Hansen, who played in the NFL from 1984 to 1999, will attend a series of training sessions in Indianapolis focused on technique and education pertaining to injury prevention and then impart on a few local youth leagues.

South Dakota Junior Football and the Boys and Girls Club of Watertown Tackle Football are scheduled to participate in Heads Up for 2013.

The tagline of Heads Up is to try to change the culture of the game.
