Headlining this year event is Dave Winfield.

The St. Paul native is a member of both the Baseball Hall of Fame and College Baseball Hall of Fame.

Winfield excelled in both baseball and basketball for the University of Minnesota in the late 1960′s and early 1970′s.  He was eventually drafted by teams in MLB (San Diego Padres), the NBA (Atlanta Hawks), the ABA (Utah Stars), and NFL (Minnesota Vikings), settling on baseball with the Padres in 1973.

After eight years in San Diego and four all-star game appearances, Winfield signed a free agent contract with the New York Yankees in 1981.  In ten seasons in pinstripes, Winfield went to eight more all-star games and won five gold gloves for his play in the outfield.

Winfield moved on to play two seasons with the California Angels, one with the Toronto Blue Jays (the 1992 World Championship team), before finishing his career with the hometown Minnesota Twins in 1993 and 1994.

Winfield was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility in 2001 and was a member of the College Baseball Hall of Fame’s first class in 2006.

He finished his career with 465 home runs, 1,833 runs batted in, 3,110 hits, and a lifetime average of .283.

Christian Laettner was a standout college basketball player at Duke from 1988 to 1992, where he won two national championships and became the first player to start in four straight final fours.  His college career is probably best remembered for his last-second, back-to-the-basket, turn-around, game-winning jump shot against Kentucky in the 1992 East regional final in Philadelphia.

Laettner was a first team All-American and the college basketball Player of the Year in 1992.  That same year he was a member of the inaugural ‘Dream Team’ that won the gold medal at the Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, playing alongside the likes of Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird.

He was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010.

Leattner began his 13-year NBA career with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 1992 and was on the NBA All-Rookie team in 1993, after he was drafted third overall behind Shaquille O’Neal and Alonzo Mourning.  After nearly four seasons in Minnesota, Laettner was traded to the Atlanta Hawks, where he made his first – and only – NBA All-Star team in 1997.

His career also included stops in Detroit, Dallas, Washington, and Miami before retiring in 2005.

Terrell Davis had a brief, but very productive career with the Denver Broncos.  The former sixth round draft pick from Georgia, rushed for more than 1,100 yards in each of his first three seasons with the Broncos, topping the 2,000 yard mark in his fourth professional season.  He was a member of Denver’s back-to-back Super Bowl champion teams in 1998 and 1999.

Knee injuries limited him to just 17 games in the next three seasons before his retirement in 2002 at the age of 29.

Davis was a three time pro bowler, the NFL MVP, MVP of Super Bowl XXXII in 1998.

Winfield, Laettner and Davis will join South Dakota natives Mike Miller of the Memphis Grizzlies and Chad Greenway of the Minnesota Vikings at this year’s Legends event.

Over the year’s, the Legends For Kids has raised more than $1 million for youth sports in the Sioux Empire.
